After a year without a contact fixture spirits where high in the Southwell squad with everyone wanting to prove themselves to the new coach Mr. Powell.

With the game to be played under the adapted laws (no scrums or mauls) we were anticipating this to be a fast pace game that would test our fitness and organisation.

From the start Southwell tried to play with a high tempo but some mistakes and mis-communication during the early minutes of the game meant the guests could apply the pressure and push us back into our own 22. Southwell managed to scramble back into their defensive line as Melton sent in big carries one after another. Southwell’s defence was up to the task and started to push Melton back into their own half. In an effort to win back the lost territory the guests tried kicking back deep into Southwell’s half but the back three of Hill, Meal and Broughton where waiting. After some strong carries Southwell sent the ball out wide to Broughton to get the home side on the score board first.

Southwell continued to put on a solid display in defence with some dominant tackles being made most notably by Keaton Drury and Luke Saywell.

As the guests began to tire Southwell capitalized on their opportunities with Tom Broughton doting down again, Stefan Dahl Ortiz also getting a brace, a try for Sam Garrett and Connor Shaw getting over the line in the final play of the game.

The Final result: Southwell 40 – Melton 0

This weekend the Southwell squad will travel to Melton for the return fixture.
