Well, we did it! Tim Brooks brought a hardy bunch down from Southwell RFC to face the undoubted might of the North Vets XV. An early tap on the leg was enough to get rid of skipper Prew (we suspect over-training), but we manned up to see out the first half ahead despite losing the fleet-footed Bill Summers with a strain to his newly fitted hamstring (a real pity as his snazzy pink shorts were unsoiled up to then)!
Sides were balanced out at half time and the contest continued with a handful of tries, the most accomplished of which belonged to guest Spam from Smiths RFC who ran a good 20 metres (he’ll claim 50, of course) handing off a persistent challenge from Southwell’s smallest player all the way in!
A few bumps and bruises along the way - this was a game played in the true spirit of Rubgy, by some elderly stalwarts of the club! Thank you to all who made it possible: Adge for preparing a great playing surface and then playing on it, Clare and her gang for organising food and hospitality for all players and our guests, Courtenay for patching up so many old crocks, Brooker for making the journey with his intrepid band, and our legion of supporters of all ages who urged us all on. So much fun, so much enjoyment and so much bonhomie amongst our rugby family. This is what rugby is to me! One north nation!!!! PB
