Ashfield friendly victory

Tim Brooks13 Oct 2015 - 18:49

Another good performance and fine half time oranges

Park Lane dawned fine and sunny for the first visit at junior level from Ashfileld. A few changes from the previous week as World Cup availability saw the return of Isaac Burley at fly half, the debut of Adam Gel at scrum half for the whole match, and the first appearance of another Sam, Sam Horsley,, on the wing.

The young Redmen dominated much of the opening exchanges, but a combination of determined Ashfileld defending and too many individual back line efforts, saw the first 10 minutes scoreless. Eventually a phases were linked together, and Matt Locke. Made a trade mark burst to score under the posts , with Isaac adding the extras, 7 - 0 Southwell. The Southwell pack dominated the early scrims and line outs , a pattern that was to follow through the whole game with Tim Stokes ending up with a phenomenal 10 strikes against the head.

Isaac Burley scored the next try with the. Conversion missed, 12 - 0, again handling errors, with the back line trying to pass under to much pressure, saw several promising breaks fail. This was a pattern to be repeated through the game, but the overall strength of our defence and and the sheer number of chances created saw pretty much one way traffic for much of the game.

Next to score was Freddie King with a powerful surge through the middle which the excellent match day official did well to keep pace with, 19 -0. Then followed an Isaac Burley hat trick, before the forwards tried to get on the board.

Sam Brooks failed to hear the whistle before completing a 55 metre dash, complete with an ash splash , before coming back for the scrum! This was followed by a great break by Finn Green, who seemed certain to score until a last gasp tackle felled him 15 m out. Eventually James Leech, converted for the forwards with his first try of the season , with Isaac adding the extras 45 - 0. Matt Locke ended the game as he started with the final score making it 50 - 0.

The red defence held out as Ashfileld pushed hard to score at the end of the match, but not before Sam H showed his pace on the wing, and perhaps a hint to the backline of what to do with pace on the outside.... Something to work on, as better passing and use of the wings would have certainly seen even more scores.

Next week the return of Paviors in the NLD cup, hopefully we will see the great support from parents and friends as we have seen over the last few weeks, to bring the win that should secure Cup rugby again next season.
